Blog Post 9

Mr. Joe McClung

the term experience

In this weeks Blog Post assignment the students of EDM310 were asked to read Mr. Joe McClung's blog At the Teachers Desk. Mr. McClung graduated in 2009 with a degree in elementary education, and since graduating he has been teaching for three years. With the completion of each school year Mr. McClung writes a blog post which summarizes his experiences for that past year. The students of EDM310 were required to read, summarize, and explain their reactions to the blog posts that Mr. McClung published. I have decided to comment on Mr. McClung's first and last summary posts, and by doing so I hope to see the changes that Mr. McClung has experienced during the past three years.

May 27, 2009 What I've Learned This Year (2008-09)

paper that says stay positive
Mr. McClung's first summary post was titled What I've Learned This Year. Mr. McClung stated that this was his first year of teaching, and after one year of teaching experience he claimed to have learned TONS of information! Mr. McClung learned that being an educator is not about how the educator delivers the lesson, but rather the students comprehension of the lesson. I am in total support, and I have made remarks about this topic in blog posts, that the main aspect of education is the students comprehension of the material. It is the teachers job to HELP the student comprehend the material, but it is not the teachers job to spoon feed the student. Mr. McClung put it best when he said, "They become so concerned with the delivery of the content that they are missing the most important aspect of teaching, and that is checking for student comprehension".

The idea of being flexable was an important lesson that Mr. McClung claimed to have learned. Mr. McClung stated that, "we have to remember that we are performing in front of a crowd that struggles remembering what they brought for lunch that day". Through previous experience I have learned that lessons rarely go as planed, and I can completely sympathize with Mr. McClung in this aspect. He also made mintion of the importance of communication. In order for any student to learn they must have communication with their teacher. Lecture can be beneficial and can serve an important purpose when it is used in balance with other approaches, but lecture will be of no value if there is no communication between the student and teacher.

Mr. McClung hit me square between the eyes when he made mention of being reasonable with students. I often set high expectations for any student that I teach, and this is due to my passion for people to master the things that I teach them. I'm sure that experince will cure this flaw in my teaching approach, but Mr. McClung definatly helped me realize the high expectations that I place on the people I teach. I had to smile when Mr. McClung mentioned the use of technology which has been the theme of EDM310 all semester, and technology has been the emphasis of many blog posts that I have published. I did enjoy how he presented the notion of incorporating technology. There are many people that fear technology without fully giving it a chance. The theory of technology being fully included in school has been debated regularly, but schools should not exclude technology for the sole purpose of excluding technology. I love the way that Mr. McClung put it when he said, "We cannot expect to master computer skills the first time we attempt them, so jump in head first....the water feels fine :)".

hand with listen written on it

Listening to the students is an important aspect of teaching, and it was an aspect that Mr. McClung brought out quite well. If educators agree that the students comprehention of the matterial is the most important aspect of education, then educators must always be willing to listen to what students have to say. If a student is passionate about learning and understanding the matterial, then they will ask questions and want to meet with their teacher. I find the best teachers to be the individuals who do not view themselves as superior to the student, but rather submit themselves to the students as their supporters and mentors. I mean lets be real, if you care for the student then I would image you would be willing to help the student in any way possible. The last thing that Mr. McClung mentioned was the fact that educators should never stop learning. To many people are set in their ways and refuse to change for anyone. This is the main problem that people incounter when trying to incorporate technology in the school system. Educators should be WILLING to try what ever tactic might help a student understand the curiculum. The greatest thing about being willing is that if it doesn't work you don't have to continue using that tactic. I can agree with and fully understand the things that Mr. McClung stated in his first summary post.

June 23, 2011 What I Learned This Year (2010-11)
Mr.McClung's homeroom class
Mr. McClung's Homeroom Class

Mr. McClung seemed to have ended his third year of teaching just as passionate as he had his first. In What I Learned This Year (2010-11) he explain that the past year was not the same old experience that he had previously gone through. Mr. McClung made mention of the new experiences he had during his third year of teaching. This was his first time to complete two consecutive years at a school, and this was his first experience as head coach at a school. Mr. McClung's first major point in this post was centered upon recognizing the student as the most important person that educators come in contact with everyday. Mr. McClung mentioned the amount of people pleasing that teachers do on a regular basis, and he warned educators not to lose their passion for the kids. He went on to write about how peoples attitudes can so negativity influence your own passion for success. Mr. McClung put it best by stating, "I guess the moral of this lesson is that you cannot allow others to stifle your own excitement and joy that you experience in teaching or any other facet of life for that matter". I have always found discouraging people to be near when I come up with a new tactic, and I have discovered that if I buy into their negative influence then nothing will ever be accomplished.

one against many
Mr. McClung went on to write about how we should not be ashamed to be an outsider. This idea falls inline with Mr. McClung's perivious point about not letting the negative addutudes of others influence our own passions. Every time that I have tried to be positive about change I always seem to be standing alone. Mr. McClung mentioned in his first summary post that people are not always passionate about change, and if an individual embraces change they will defiantly feel like the outsider. Yet again Mr. McClung's experience was directed toward me when he made the statement "don't touch the keyboard". The concept of not touching the keyboard refers to teachers who help their students by doing the work for them. All to often teachers have helped me by doing certain tasks for me which ultimatly created an attitude of laziness in my work. Teachers who teach by touching their students keyboard always encourages students to ask more questions and cease thinking for themselves. All to often I have taken the reins from a peer that I have tried to help which ultimatly displayed my skill and did not result in their learning. In my opinion there is no difference between doing the work for students and just lecturing to students all day.

a fat teacher sleeping

Don't Get Comfortable is the last point that Mr. McClung made in his summary post. He was refering to the his own desire to coast through the students daily work, and not passionatly seek to go above and beyond in order to better benefit the student. To become comfortable is not a benefitial way to achieve a task. The best things in life will take time and effort to achieve, and anything less than active learning will not benefit a child.

I did enjoy reading Mr. McClung's summary posts, and I benefited greatly from reading these two posts. Please feel free to comment on my comentary of Mr. McClung's exceptional work.

Tumblr logo

Scott Kemp's blog is different than most of the blogs that I have visited; because, he uses Tumblr which is a completely different format than most blogs. Kemp's blog was titled The Radical Tactical Shift, and was composed of multiple quotes which were linked to their source. I did like the way that Scott Kemp organised his Tumblr, and Tumblr reminds me of a larger twitter composed of short quotes and sayings.

Scott Kemp's First Post

Scott Kemp's first post was a quote by Shantanu Sinha. Sinha's article can be found in the Huffington Post and was included in Scott Kemp's blog. I really enjoyed the quote that Kemp included which stated, "If we build a game in which someone is demotivated or disengaged for 45 seconds, we know we need to improve. Forty-five seconds! Imagine if we thought this way in education". Scott Kemp wanted to bring out the importance of incorporating active fun learning in the classroom as opposed to passive and boring learning. The next paragraph is the comment that I submitted in response to Kemp's post.

Hello,
I am a student at the University of South Alabama. I am currently enrolled in the course EDM310 through which I was assigned to your blog. Most Scholarly students might search for one of your more lengthy post, but I was especially drawn to this post. I found great truth in your post which especially peaked my curiosity to read more into Shantanu Sinha's article. I find that educators are robbing children of their bright future in higher education by sucking the fun out of learning. They create a dull atmosphere in their classrooms centered upon the sole technique of lecture. I feel that lecture should be strengthened by research, and mastered by in-class discussion and activities. This method, in my opinion, does not provide any down time and promotes active learning rather than passive learning. Classrooms should be alive with activity, and on all levels of education learning can be fun. The problem is that teachers do not have fun themselves, and they view their job as a job rather than investing in the lives of their students. I am an avid sports fan and lover of education so I can relate to this illustration extremely well.

C4T Teacher Swap...Dr. Strange on Lecture

man alone in a lecture hall

Dr. Strange commented on blog post #7, and he asked me to visit his blog and comment on a post that he had made. Dr. Strange allowed me to substitute one of my C4T assignments in order to comment on his blog. Dr. Stranges blog post was titled Lectures Part 1. Dr. Strange provided plenty of information, both pro and con, concerning the benefit of lectures in the classroom. Below is my comment.

Dr. Strange,
I would like to thank you for the invitation to comment on your blog this week, and for allowing me to substitute my C4T assignment in order to read and comment on your blog post. The debate concerning the benefit of lecture in the classroom is a topic that I am extremely passionate about. There are many different theories among educators concerning how to manage a classroom, but all educators seem to revert back to the default method of teaching which is said to be lecture. I hope that all educators would agree that student comprehension of the curriculum is the most important aspect of education, and right behind student comprehension is the teacher's method of presenting the material in a way that will provide the student with the best chance of comprehension. Take note that I mentioned the student before the teacher; this is because the students comprehension is far more important than any other aspect of education. Each teacher should be open to the teaching method that will most benefit the student. Student comprehension is of the most importance!

The question that needs to be answered centers upon the teacher's method of enhancing a child's comprehension. I feel that the material must be stated to be understood. The classroom material and objectives must be stated by the teacher in order for the student to have a direction or starting point. I find that people learn by experience regardless of how many instructions have been given. For example, I would have never learned to write in cursive or do my multiplication tables if a teacher had never given me the opportunity to learn from experience. I often wonder why teachers change their philosophy of teaching as students grow older by excluding student involvement from the classroom.

We as humans are given five senses. Each of these senses enable us to perceive the world around us. I often wonder why educators find it beneficial to limit a student to one sense because by doing so they limit the child's comprehension by 80%. Lecture is strictly limited to oral communication, and oral communication will not provide a student with a full comprehension of the curriculum! Is lecture therefore of no value? Lecture seems to always be practiced in the classroom but as the ancient saying goes, everything is permissible but not everything is beneficial. However, I do find lecture to be extremely beneficial in regard to education. Lecture is beneficial when used in balance with other teaching methods.

Lecture puts more emphasis on the teachers knowledge, and lecture puts less emphasis on the students comprehension. I feel that teaching tactics could be grouped into three categories: lecture, research, and discussion. People know very well the role that lecture plays in the classroom, but I find lecture to be best utilized as the instruction which enables students to explore and comprehend ON THEIR OWN. The learning method of self motivated comprehension is what I would term “research”. Students should first audibly consume instruction form lecture, then the student should take full advantage of his or her other four senses by researching the information addressed in lecture. Classroom discussions are absolutely necessary for each student to fully understand the information consumed through lecture and research. I have never become more passionate about a topic until I discuss the results of my research with peers. I find that discussion enables students to practice what they have have learned rather than the traditional consumption of information through lectures and research. I do not rank lecture, research, nor discussion; but I find each of them to be dependent on one another. To exclude one of these teaching tools, in my opinion, cripples a student from fully comprehending the material.

Lecture can be beneficial when used appropriately in regard to providing a student with the best learning environment. Feel free to give me constructive feedback on my comment! I look forward to your reply!

Blog Post 8

1. Richard Miller: This Is How We Dream Parts 1 and 2

ancient writing

This Is How We Dream was an extremely remarkable production by Dr. Richard E. Miller of Rutgers University. Dr. Miller mentioned many important advances that technology has made over the years and how the world will benefit from these technological advances. Dr. Miller's presentation revolved around the impact that technology has had on the world, and he focused specifically on how technology has transformed the way that people write. Before the television was invented information would take weeks to travel across the country, but after the invention of the television information was able to spread rapidly across America. During the radical protests of the 1960’s people would chant the phrase “the whole world is watching”, and like no other time in history the whole world was watching. Because of this new technology the world would base its political ideology on what had been revealed to it through the television. The Presidential debates between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon were the first to be televised, and they altered the way that people would view an American president. Technology changed the way people viewed their politicians, and technology became the most influential aspect that swayed public opinion. People look back at the beneifits that technology has made over the years and wonder how they could ever do without technology such as: the television, the radio, and the cell phone. Just like the invention of the television we are now experiencing an explostion of technology during this age, and the revelation of this technological explosion was the main goal of Dr. Miller's presentation.

Dr. Miller focused his presentation around the vast amount of information that people have access to. Through modern technology we have access to the riches of the world, and with such access who are we to hold information to ourselves? Technology has provieded many benefits for the society that we live in, but the greatest benefit that Dr. Miller brought out was the ability for the world to unite and share information. The art of writing has been around throughout the history of the world, but only resontly has the written language evolved to a universally accessable form of media. Another important aspect of technology that Dr. Miller brought out was the collabrative tools which are so easily accessed and used from the internet. By utilizing collaborative tools such as Facetime, Skype, Google documents, and many others people are able to come together, regardless of geographical distance, and work on a document at the same time.

We no longer live in an age of stagnant information, but we live in an age where information is constantly changing before our eyes. Dr. Miller made this point clear by showing the viewer how updated information helped him access the imidiate American response to the election of Barack Obama. An aspect of the presentation that is extremely benefitial to EDM310 was when Dr. Miller made the statement, “We as educators must be in the business of sharing ideas freely”. I have mentioned in previous blog posts the absolute importance of research in the classroom, and I feel that lecture should be strengthened by updated information which is accessed through student research. The idea of sharing information is vitally important to anyone whose profession is conveying information to students. I am not content with accepting information that someone teaches me, but I always put everything to the test inorder to determine the most accurate information to base my beliefs on. I feel that any person who will educate kids should be passionate, NOT PASSIVE, about sharing information. The idea of sharing information was well stated by Dr. Miller in multiple places throughout this presentation. A few of my favorite quotes from Dr. Miller's presentation are: “Ideas do not belong to us as an individuals”, “We should be at the front edge of putting ideas into our culture”, and “How could we not be interested in making sense of the world that we live in”. This was an amazing presentation!

2. Carly Pugh's Blog Post 12

Carly did a magnificent job with blog post #12. I really enjoyed her suggestion of the Youtube playlist, and I see how createing a playlist could beneit any future educator. Carly's writting technique absolutely fell in line with Dr. Miller's presentation about writing with multi-media. Carly's blog post was extremely thorough, and her blog post was the perfect example of how we as future educators should write. Most of the student blog posts in EDM 310 are what I would call "satisfactory work", but we as future educators should not produce satisfactory work we should aspire to go above and beyond! Carly's post was above and beyond that of her peers, and I commend her for the excellent work!

3. The Chipper Series & EDM 310 for dummies

The first video that I was assigned to watch was The Chipper Series. This video was about a girl named Chipper who disliked how Dr. Strange ran his class. Chipper went through many stages in the video such as: complaining, dropping out of school, starting a school, she was hired at a school, she tried to become a nanny, she became a garbage collector, and finally she returned to school. This video illustrated the importance of submitting assignments on time.

the book edm310 for dummies

The second video that I was assigned to watch was EDM310 For Dummies. This video was a student production. The video was about two students who were having a hard time in EDM310, but the students problems were solved by reading the book EDM310 For Dummies. There are many different videos that I could see myself creating in EDM310 this semester, but whatever type video that I chose to create will illustrate an important aspect of EDM310. How to develop and maintain a personal learning network could be a great idea for a video.

4. Learn to Change, Change to Learn

the word change

Learn to Change, Change to Learn was an extremely interesting film. My view of incorporating technology in the classroom has changed this semester, and the assigned videos in EDM310 have played a large role in my transformation. I believe strongly in the triunity of educating, a theory that I came up with, which consists of lectures, research, and discussion. I am not an advocate for demolishing organized lectures; however, I am against any teaching philosophy that believes in full exclusion of technology, just as I am against any teaching philosophy that believes in full inclusion of technology. Whatever teaching method that provides the student with the best understanding of the material I will be in full support of.

5. Scavenger Hunt 2.0

For the last assignment of blog post 8 I was asked to embark on a technological scavenger hunt. I was ask to find three different things in this scavenger hunt and here are my results.

emdodo connecting micro-blogging sites

1) I was asked to locate a tool that is similar to Twitter and Facebook that provides a social platform for teachers, parents, and students. Through searching WEB 2.0 Tools I was able to find the perfect school friendly social network. The social network that I signed up for was Edmodo. There are many different ways that I can see myself taking full advantage of this website. I can see how the site could offer a clearer method of communication between myself, parents, and students. Micro-blogging websites such Twitter and Facebook make it easy for individuals to communicate ideas, but Edmodo takes communicating ideas to a greater professional level.

2)The second thing that I was asked to find was a comic creating tool that I could use in a class. The website I found to be the most beneficial was MakeBeliefsComix. I enjoyed this website because of how easy it was to use, and I could definitely use this tool in a classroom. I do wish that the website provided the teacher with more characters to include their comics, and as you can see from my comic I had to use two characters that were not from Colonial America. Overall this seemed to be a great website.

Animoto logo

3) The video website that I found most beneficial was Animoto. There are multiple things that can be done through this website. Animoto creates videos from video clips and pictures that you upload to the internet. Animoto allows you to share the videos that you create through social networking websites. One of the biggest benefits associated with using Animoto is the fact that it is a free program, but charges will occur if you choose to create a video that exceeds 30 seconds. I can see many benefits associated with this website, and I could definitely see myself using Animoto in the future.

The Now Frontier: Posting Dissertations Online

road sign displaying change ahead

I was assigned to Will Deyamport's blog. In his blog post The Now Frontier: Posting Dissertations Online He was describing the difficulty that university's have had with embracing this new technological age. Mr. Deyamport is extremely technologically centered, and he could not understand why a modern day college has not utilized the method of submitting dissertations online. Mr. Deyamport gave a list of reasons why he was going to submit his dissertation online.

I commented on Will Deyamport's blog although I had little knowledge of dissertations and higher education practices. I basically told mr. Deyamport how shocked I was to hear that higher level institutions have not converted their facilities to be technologically centered. I also informed Mr. Deyamport that I forsee by the time that I would be working toward a doctorate degree that schools will have fully imbraced technology. The next paragraph is a copy of my comment.

Hello, my name is Keeley Bryan and I am a student at the University of South Alabama currently taking EDM310. I am working on a bachelors degree in secondary education. I know that there is minimal use of technology in high schools today, and technology seems to be more utilized in colleges than in high schools. We do live in a technology age and I do not understand why a university would not not utilize the process of submitting a dissertation on-line. The title of your blog post is accurate in relation to the present age that we live in, but I do foresee colleges eventually converting all of their possesses to the internet. I'm not and most likely will not be working toward a doctorate or submitting a dissertation, but I do think that by the time I will be teaching technology will be utilized by nearly every school system. I am not necessarily an advocate for consuming a child's life with technology, but I do believe that schools should prepare students for their future which will be technologically centered. I really enjoyed reading your blog post. Feel free to check out my EDM 310 class blog.

The End of Teaching (as we know it) - Slideshow by Alvaro González-Alorda

the world connected by technology

Mr. Deyamport's second blog post that I commented on was titled The End of Teaching as we Know It. In mr. Dayampor's blog post he added a slideshow about changing the role of education. The slideshow was created by Alvaro Gonzalez-Alorda. Mr. Deyamport's post went along perfectly with the information that we have addressed all semester in EDM310, and that is the idea of incorporating technology in the classroom and changing the role of the teacher.

Here is my comment that I left on mr. Deyamport's blog. Hello,
I commented on one of your previous blog posts a couple of weeks ago. I am a student at the University of South Alabama majoring in secondary history education. This semester I have had multiple different thoughts and ideologies thrown at me concerning incorporating technology in the classroom, and I have had the idea mentioned to me about changing the role of teachers from teacher to motivator. In my EDM310 class the main topic that I have researched is about incorporating technology in today's schools. I personally feel that refusing to incorporate technology in the classroom is criminal in an age that is so technology advanced, but I do not feel that certain classes should be centered upon technology. Sure, educators can benefit from incorporating technology in the class room, but I feel that the use of technology should be limited to a healthy extent which will promote the best learning environment. I suppose my idea of incorporating technology is directed toward limiting distraction and promoting the most beneficial means of educating students, and not just incorporating something just because it's new. I really enjoyed visiting your blog for the past two weeks and I appreciate the work that you do. I also enjoyed the slide show that you incorporated in this blog post.

First progress report on PLN Project # 10

home screen of iGoogle

Before entering EDM310 I had never heard of a Personal Learning Network. While working on blog post #7 this week my eyes were opened to the benefits associated with developing a Personal Learning Network. When asked to undertake this assignment I had slight difficulty organizing and creating my own PLN, but to my surprise I have actually been developing my PLN all semester in EDM310. My problem then went from organizing and creating to organizing and stating what my PLN actually consists of.

Generally I will use two web browsers which are Google Chrome and Apple's Safari. Both of these web browsers help me to organize the websites that I visit and bookmark on a regular basis. I do generally tend to use Google Chrome more than Safari, and I prefer my welcome screen to be iGoogle. iGoogle provides plenty of amazing tools that I am able to utilize in developing an organized Personal Learning Network. iGoogle allows me to put gadgets on my home screen which link me to various websites and that help me in my learning experience. With iGoogle I see the most current events every time that I log onto my computer. Safari also provides me a number of beneficial tools that helped me in developing my PLN.

screen shot of safari home page

twitter home screen

My Personal Learning Network is not limited to my welcome screen nor multiple websites, but my PLN also includes peers and fellow researchers through social networks such as twitter and Facebook. I enjoy using Facebook to connect with peers, but I have found no better way of communication than through Twitter. I actually find twitter to be the most efficient way to communicate. I also enjoy using Google+ but the only problem that I have encountered with Google+ is the lack of users. With assets such as the +1 button Google+ would benefit me far more than Facebook and Twitter. My PLN in no where near completed and is a growing process. I wait in anticipation for the future development of my PLN.

Blog Post 7

1) The Networked Student by Wendy Drexler

an image of people that are connected by a social network

Wendy Drexler's video fell inline with the curriculum that we have discussed in class all semester. Wendy's aim in creating this video was to make known the idea of the networked student. The main focus of the networked student is not on lecture and textbooks, but rather the main focus of the networked student is on connectivism. Connectivism is the belief that learning occurs as a result of a social network of many diverse connections and ties between students. The positives associated with connectivism is that connectivism forces students take control of their own learning experience, and connectivism forces students to develop ties with other students to better understand the material. This method of learning is centered around a personal learning network which utilizes blogs and search engines to aid in student understanding. Once a student builds a blog he or she can post reflections about what was learned, and other students can comment on that post in order to find the most accurate information. The main concept to understand is that the twenty first century student network will create a wide range of connections.

I have plenty of mixed emotions about this topic which have been stated in my previous blog posts. I do feel that all students should do a fair amount of personal research concerning the information addressed in class, and I feel that all students should research and discuss information addressed in class with their peers. By way of research and discussion students will make connections and ties. At this point in time I do not feel that every class should be technologically centered, nor do I feel that every classroom should focus on social networking. Should social networking and technology be restricted form the general education classroom? I feel that technology and social networking should not be restricted from the classroom, but they should be utilized to a healthy extent in order to enhance learning. A classroom should consist of lecture, reading, discussion, research, and to a healthy extent technology. We live in the technology age and I feel that it would be criminal to deny a student proper education in technology. Technology centered classes must be required if we intend to prepare students for their future, but classes should focus on the curriculum assigned to it. I personally feel that teachers are needed not only to lecture and teach but to also offer guidance to students. I agree with the video to the extent that teachers should be the motivators of the students when it comes to research, but lecture and teaching are important aspects of education.

One of the most important aspects of the video was when the viewer was asked what the significance of the teacher would be when so much emphasis has been placed on the student. I briefly addressed this in my last paragraph, but the only way in which I differ from Wendy's option is by adding the important task of lecturing and teaching which Wendy excluded. To fully utilize the ideology of connectivism the teacher must become many things which I am not necessarily opposed to. Through the networked student model the teacher becomes the individual who teaches the student how to build a network and take advantage of new learning opportunities; the teacher becomes the individual who gives guidance when it is need; the teacher becomes the individual to teach the student how to communicate respectfully; the teacher becomes the individual to show the student how to differentiate between good information and propaganda; and the teacher also becomes the individual who will organize those complex mountains of information discovered by the student. The teachers main goal through connectivism is that the student can use this information to navigate his or her future. I'm not in total opposition to Wendy's outlook, but I do feel that the teacher's responsibility is slightly more involved than was described in the video.

2) A 7th Grader's Personal Learning Environment (or PLN)

brainstorming image concerning PLE

This video was another production of Wendy Drexler. In this video a 7th grade student displayed her own personal learning environment that she had created. I really enjoyed seeing the things that she was able to do in her class through her personal learning environment. She was able to have all of her school work and social networks linked into one organized network through her PLE. This can be a great thing as long as it is utilized correctly.
